Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs)
Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) are highly seaworthy naval or governmental surveillance ships designed primarily for extended missions within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and open waters. They bridge the operational gap between smaller coastal patrol boats and heavily armed warships (such as corvettes or frigates). Their primary responsibilities include border security, counter-piracy and smuggling operations, the protection of offshore infrastructure (such as wind farms or oil rigs), and Search and Rescue (SAR) missions. Acting as floating command centers, OPVs integrate a multitude of reconnaissance sensors (e.g., C-ESM, R-ESM, radar, and SATCOM), requiring their data to be fused onto a centralized shipboard GUI.
