System of Systems (SoS)
A System of Systems (SoS) is a high-level, large-scale overarching network created by combining multiple independent, fully operational, and complex individual systems. The participating sub-systems retain their operational and managerial independence but collaborate to achieve a combined, synergistic total performance that no single system could accomplish on its own. A user-friendly control infrastructure for an SoS faces the challenge of abstracting highly heterogeneous data structures through overarching graphical user interfaces (GUIs) in such a way that the massive complexity of the entire network becomes transparent, manageable, and operable as a single, consistent unit for the operator.
