Friend or foe identification

Friend or foe identification refers to systems and procedures that determine whether a detected air, sea or ground object belongs to one's own or allied forces or is potentially hostile. The best-known principle is IFF (Identification Friend or Foe), which uses transponders and interrogation signals to uniquely identify targets. The aim is to avoid misidentification, support operational command and ensure the safety of friendly forces.
